Power System SOFTWARE Engineering Courses (PSSC)

Fundamental training course intended to quickly provide novice PSS®E users with hands-on experience using PSS®E. More than an application course, PSSC 500 will acquaint participants with most program functions in sufficient detail to begin study work relevant to power flow and fault analysis. Topics include power flow modeling data, one-line diagrams, power flow solutions and reports, program automation, response files IPLAN and Python, contingency and transfer limit analysis and more.

Fundamental training course on the use of PSS®E for dynamic simulation. This course covers data development and input for dynamics, initial system setup and checkout, running dynamic simulations, plotting results, and more. This course includes hands-on experience using PSS®E.

Training course on the use of the PSS®E Optimal Power Flow (PSS®E OPF) program. Topics covered include: system planning and operations problems, VAr planning, transfer capability analysis, loss evaluation, locational based marginal cost assessment, problem formulations, solution techniques and practical considerations. Students will participate in hands-on exercises using PSS®E OPF. This course is valuable to both new and experienced system planning engineers. Training course on the use of the Python programming language to enhance the power and flexibility of PSS®E. Teaches the basics of Python and how to write and execute effective scripts for controlling PSS®E. Topics covered also include: automating PSS®E execution, creating specialized reports, communicating PSS®E data to other software applications, building custom program dialog and running PSS®E response files and IPLAN programs from Python. Students will participate in hands-on exercises using Python in PSS®E.

Focuses on the PSS®ODMS data management and network applications suite centered on the Common Information Model (CIM) and Generic Interface Definition (GID) international standards. This course will show users how to maintain the central data repository for operations and planning data using advanced modeling and analytical tools. Topics covered include model management, diagram building, power flow and contingency analysis studies and more. This course is designed for those with varied experience using PSS®ODMS who could benefit from a review of basic concepts as well an introduction to more advanced topics.

Covers practical applications of PSS®MUST for transfer limit analysis, ATC calculations, parametric contingency analysis, transaction impact analysis on transfer limits, impact of inter-regional transactions on control areas, sensitivity analysis for the most limiting constraints, generation dispatch sensitivity analysis on transfer limits, identification of the "must run" units and the NERC flowgate concept. PSS®MUST users are welcome to bring their system's load-flow data to use during the training.

Introduces the use of a dynamic model development tool based on graphical representation of control block diagrams.  Trainees learn Block-Oriented Simulation Language (BOSL) and the MS®Visio-based Graphical Model Builder (GMB).

This course provides lecture and practical exercises on the analysis methods for viewing inter-area oscillations in large power systems. Techniques to help increase system stability, to allow a deeper view into weak points, and to determine the best damping locations and damping strategies are covered.

Teaches advanced applications of the PSS®E power flow. Topics include: load flow and short circuit interface, transformer and FACTS devices modeling, voltage analysis, optimal power flow, advanced contingency and reliability analyses, program automation and more.

Teaches advanced applications of the PSS®E program for the dynamic simulation of power systems. This course has been redesigned to rely on a hands-on approach. The student will be challenged by studies such as interconnection studies of conventional power plants and wind farms, voltage stability and dynamic reactive power compensation and frequency control and under-frequency load shedding. The examples and exercises are designed to focus on aspects of dynamic modeling such as synchronous generators, excitation systems, prime movers, wind turbines, HVDC and FACTS devices and loads.

Advanced training course for PSS®E users who need to write their own PSS®E dynamic models or customize existing models. Description of the PSS®E simulation program structure, indexing, variables and arrays are included. This course covers structuring user models, equations for typical model blocks using the FORTRAN and FLECS program languages and advanced uses of CONEC and CONET. Students will write sample PSS®E dynamic simulation models.

Participants will acquire basic knowledge on how to use the net planning program PSS®SINCAL for basic calculations on topics related to load flow and short circuit. Students will participate in hands-on exercises using PSS®SINCAL. This course is valuable to engineers and service technicians who work in operation, planning and design of power systems.

Participants will acquire basic knowledge on how to use the net planning program PSS®SINCAL for protective relaying including time overcurrent and applications relating to distance protection. The course is intended for engineers and service technicians who work in operation, planning and design of power systems. A basic knowledge of protective relaying is recommended.

The participant will acquire the basic knowledge of how to use the net planning program PSS®SINCAL with respect to reliability planning and the interpretation of software results.

The participant will acquire the basic knowledge of how to use the net planning program PSS®SINCAL for analysis of dynamic conditions. Course provides use in the software for basic calculations on topics related to stability, transients and Eigenvalues.

Utility engineers who conduct studies with PSS®E must understand the fundamental concepts of power system behavior, as well as knowing how to execute the many complicated routines within the program. This course is directed at the experienced PSS®E user who would like to increase his/her analytical skills in the analysis of voltage control issues in steady state and dynamic simulation.
