Ultra High Voltage Direct Current System (UHVDC)

In the future it will be necessary to transmit bulk power exceeding 4000 MW covering a distance of about 2000 km. Ultra High Voltage Direct Current Systems (UHVDC) with voltage levels above 600 kV will be a feasible and affordable solution.

Challenges caused by high requirements for insulation, clearances and corona performance have to be considered. A coordinating Research and Development Program in few key areas will ensure the availability of the UHVDC within the near future.
