Information Model Manager
Description
Overview
The PowerCC Information Model Manager is an essential component of the Siemens Spectrum PowerCC product line. It is a powerful desk top data modeling, data maintenance and data exchange tool specifically designed to cost effectively and efficiently manage any power system model data for EMS/DMS applications, SCADA, communication to RTU's, and ICCP and other enterprise information.
The web browser-based PowerCC IMM runs on a standard PC and a Windows 2000 platform. IMM embraces widely accepted industry standard technology such as a commercial RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) and XML (Extensible Markup Language).
Usage
Critical information and data management need in the power industry utilities are experiencing many new demands as a result of restructuring. You are challenged to integrate the new open-access information requirements into your existing operational and buisness infrastructure.
Successfully deal with more information The Siemens PowerCC IMM finally gives your utility a single, central location to input and maintain all of your power system-related data. With the PowerCC IMM your data will be organized and fully compliant with the Common Information Model (CIM) positioned to be an international standard. CIM is important to you because it provides a standard structure, format and semantics through which electric utility organizations can exchange information. Siemens is fully committed to leading and evolving CIM standards and will provide a data migration path. Your future is always safe with Siemens solution. Data model extensions are flexible for your enterprise wide needs.
Easily exchange data with entities
We live in an environment today where there is an ever-increasing need for data sharing, not just to serve your own enterprise, but also to respond to needs from outside entities. Sometimes, and lately more than others, this need is driven by industry entities. Sometimes, and lately more than others, this need is driven by industry requirements passed by governing bodies such as NERC and FERC. You need to be ready, and the powerCC IMM gets you there.

Drive maintenance costs down
You know that no tool out there is now, or ever will be, self maintaining. However, there are tools that are easier to maintain than others. The PowerCC IMM has many features that make it a clear industry leader in total cost of database and display maintenance. In, and of itself, it provides one common data entry system covering all aspects of operational information.

Description
The PowerCC Information Model Manager is a key component of Siemens Spectrum product line. It is a powerful desk top data modeling, data maintenance and data exchange tool specifically designed to cost effectively and efficiently manage any power system model data for EMS/DMS applications, SCADA, communication to RTU's, and ICCP and other enterprise information as desired.
Siemens browser-based PowerCC IMM runs on a standard PC and a Windows 2000 platform. IMM embraces widely accepted industry standard technology such as a commercial RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) and XML (Extensible Markup Language).
For data exchange the IMM provides import/export of bulk model data as well as a user interface to manually view and edit model data. The import/export format is compliant to the Common Information Model (CIM)/XML information exchange format.
EPRI helped develop, as part of the Control Center Application Program Interface (CCAPI) project, the Common Information Model (CIM) standards. The CIM has been translated into the industry standard Extensible Markup Language (XML), which permits the exchange of models in a standard format that any EMS can understand using standard Internet and/or Microsoft technologies.
The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) recently mandated the use of this standard by Security Coordination Centers (SCCs) to exchange models by September 2001, adding urgency to the deployment of products that support these standards. During the CCAPI independent vendor testing, that occurred through out 2001, Siemens IMM was the only product to surpass every portion of the interoperability testing making it the clear leader in it's class.
The user interface provides a hierarchical view of the instances imported or manually edited. It allows creating new instances, as well as modification of exiting ones. Instance data can be deleted selectively. Child instances in the hierarchy are recursively deleted in the same operation.
Changes and extensions of the current model data can be prepared easily and independent of the current active model data in a session. An activation process applies the changes to the current model data and applications get notified about those changes.
The PowerCC IMM has powerful graphical capabilities to automatically generate one-line schematics tied to the CIM data and is also used for graphical topology editing.
Technical Data
Affordable, cost effective, easy to deploy solutions
Siemens PowerCC IMM runs on a standard PC and a Windows 2000 platform. This means affordable deployment and protected investment. The IMM embraces widely accepted industry standard technology such as a commercial RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) and XML (Extensible Markup Language). The PowerCC IMM has powerful graphical capabilities to automatically generate one-line schematics tied to the CIM data. This feature alone will save you hundred of hours of effort.
The EPRI sponsored CCAPI project conducted software interoperability tests (Orlando, FL, December 2000, Las Vegas, NV, April 2001 and Monterey, CA, September 2001).
Electric utility software vendors were invited to exchange XML versions of the Common Information Model (CIM) to demonstrate how easy their respective products could exchange data based on the CIM standard. Siemens PowerCC IMM was the only tool to fully pass all parts of the test. The EPRI-sponsored test validated that Siemens PowerCC IMM fully complies with the XML version of the CIM. This proves that Siemens PowerCC IMM is really the only tool of its kind in the industry that is ready to stand up to your data exchange challenges
Value Proposition:
Reduced data maintenance cost.
Single point for all data changes.
Easy browser-based tools (i.e. drop and drag, cut and paste).
Preserve/lengthen life of EMS investment
Establishes migration path.
Low-cost integration of new applications.
Preparedness for future requirements.
Future information requirements will be based on a CIM information structure, thus the utility can meet these more efficiently.
Case Study
Xcel Energy cost justified the purchase of the product with an estimation that it will save them 50% of the labor effort associated with building displays (or one-line schematics) for a new EMS in Denver. To veiw more information about this case study go to the Download section.
Dairyland Power Cooperative is using this tool to establish a new applications infrastructure, there by prolonging their investment in their legacy system and creating an open migration path. To veiw more information about this case study go to the Download section.
