The control spark gap serves for supervising the operation of the surge arrester.
This device is inserted in the surge arrester earth lead and permits to determine whether the surge arrester has operated within a period of time and to approximately assess teh magnitudes of the surge current.
The live parts of surge arresters cannot be audited/checked during service operation.
Therefore, monitoring equipment (tell tale spark gap, surge counter) is necessary, supplying information about the arrester stress.
